Why is a Hip Fracture So Dangerous?

People break all manner of bones but a hip fracture is the most common. Research has shown that after hip fractures, women have much better survival rates than men but women are more likely to break bones in the first place. According to the Canadian Institute for Health, there were nearly 35,000 people over the age of 65 hospitalized for treatment of a hip fracture in 2022-23.

Surgeons can repair broken bones and can replace the damaged hip joint with an artificial one; or even do a complete hip replacement. Even so, 40% of elders who break a hip never walk independently again.

Parents of babies and toddlers childproof their homes to help keep their children safe. For this same reason, we need to elder proof homes to protect seniors from a hip fracture (and a variety of other injuries) while at the same time helping them to live more independently.
